While my primary studies center around music technology, I have often viewed my artistry as a flute player separate from the more technical parts of my studies. However, under the instruction of Professor Terrazas, he pushed me to combine these two interests, which led us to prepare Thea Musgrave’s Narcissus for Flute and Electronics for one of my end-of-year recitals. The electronics used in this piece were meant to be an old analog delay rack that was difficult and expensive to source. However, using the technical skills that I developed through my major, I decided to program a digital version of this rack within PureData that accomplished the same purpose, while also streamlining the controls from three pedals and several knobs to simply two pedals that I programmed cues into to control various audio effect parameters such as delay feedback, reverb decays, and looping. I took this project one step further by also incorporating water-themed visuals programmed using the GEM library in PureData that I coded to be audio-reactive, where the volume of my playing would control the size and particle speed of certain visuals.
